Once upon a time, the mothers of the bride had to wear matron dresses in Easter egg pastels or washed beige shades. Fortunately, this is the past. But now that you’re free to express your dress sensitivity, figuring out what the bride’s mom should be wearing with so many fashionable options can be incredibly overwhelming. Talk about the agony of choice! Never be afraid.

We asked bridal professionals to give us some tips to make the process as transparent as possible. Whether you are a bride hoping to help her mother find the perfect look or the materfamilias to the happy woman herself, we have the who, what, when, where and how of the MASS COST PURCHASES.

1. Let the Bride Be Your Guide

If you take away only one tip, let it be this: follow the bride’s instructions about style, color and formality. She and the groom set the tone for the event, whether it was a casual country wedding with cowboy boots or a formal tie with a black tie.

You are an important member of the wedding party and you want to see the party. So, ask your daughter some guidelines and follow the movement.

2. Take color markers from the wedding party

Traditionally, the dress of the mother of the bride must complement the colors of the wedding celebration (but not necessarily). Therefore, it is best to wait until your daughter chooses the bridesmaids’ dresses to start shopping, says expert Shea Jensen. See if you can get a sample of your fabric to take away — it will be very useful when looking for a harmonizing shade.

If your girl refrains from uniform bridesmaid dresses in favor of individual outfits of a similar shade, stick to one or the other. For example, if she asks her companions to wear black cocktail dresses, you may want to choose something in silver or gray. Or if your daughters go in cobalt sapphire, a navy dress would fit perfectly.

There is only one color that you should not wear, experts say: avoid everything that has the same color as the wedding dress. Although they deserve to be beautiful, the bride should stand out as the star of the show.

3. Borrowing from the hall

Previously, the dresses of the mother of the bride followed a kind of uniform-a cocktail jacket on a discreet sleeve. Today, almost everything happens – as long as it is suitable for the event. So, while you probably wouldn’t wear a strapless dress for a church wedding, this might be the ideal thing for a beach ceremony. However, you can add a beautiful envelope or, yes, even a jacket to the same dress and it will immediately become appropriate.

4. Timing Correctly and Communicate Your Choice

According to our bridal experts, you should start searching for your dress no after than three months before the wedding in order to have time for special orders and changes. You can look for your dress in department stores or specialty stores, but do not go beyond traditional wedding salons. Many also have options for the mother of the bride!

It is customary for the mother of the bride to first buy her dress, and then share her choice with the mother of the groom. The groom’s mother may also need special orders and changes, so make sure you give her enough time to achieve this before the wedding.

The dresses of the mothers should not match (unless the bride wants this), but they must complement each other. Remember, you will have many photos together and the only person who should stand out is the bride.

5. Be Pretty Just Before the Wedding

There are no special rules for the hair and makeup of the mother of the bride. Think again stylish, discreet and appropriate — and reflect your style. As at the wedding celebration, as a rule, on the eve of the wedding, you want to get a fresh mani and pedi, and on the day of the wedding, get styled and put on makeup. Whether you do this with the wedding celebration depends on your daughter.

If the bride prefers to be made up only with her bridesmaids, do not take it personally. You can invite the groom’s mother or other family members to have a nice party, or enjoy the rare moment of rest and plan to undress yourself. Just make sure that you plan to wear your hair and makeup—be it from a professional or a trusted friend. Too often, mothers neglect themselves in favor of their children. Remember, it’s also your special day!
